Vernie Bell Martin, affectionately known as “Mama Martin”, a lifelong resident of Baker County, entered into rest in the early morning of Saturday, September 30, 2023 at her home with family by her side at the age of 88. She was born on January 22, 1935 to the late Mr. Richard and Emma (Harvey) Lauramore.
She would work for a number of years as a charge aide at the Northeast Florida State Hospital. Ms. Vernie was very dedicated to her Native American heritage and was the “tribal mother” of the Cherokee of Georgia. She loved her family and held her grandchildren near and dear to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her loving husband: Gilles Martin of Sanderson; children: Neal (Dewana) Martin of White Springs and Maria (Tim) Alford of Sanderson; grandchildren: Emma (Dale) Anderson, Mary Geiger, Sensuerae Willis, Lonnie Alford, Tiffany (Carlos Redlich) Alford, Joseph Alford, Zachary Alford, and Timber Alford; seventeen great-grandchildren; twelve great-great grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family members.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Dinkins New Congregational Methodist Church on Monday, October 2, 2023. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, October 3, 2023 beginning at 11:00 AM at Turner Cemetery.
