Ms. Joan Elaine Smothers, age 78, of Macclenny, FL passed away Sunday, November 10th in the Haven Hospice Suwannee Valley Care Center, Lake City, FL following an extended illness. Ms. Smothers was born in Jacksonville, FL to the late Noah and Bernice Harvey Caldwell. She spent most of her life as a resident of Baker County, FL and worked at NEFSH for 35 years until her retirement. Ms. Smothers was a member of Pine Elevate Church, Jacksonville, FL and enjoyed crafting and dancing. She was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and liked to spend time on the phone with her family. Ms. Smothers was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ricky Smothers and brother, Vernon Caldwell. She is survived by her son, William Gainey (Tonya Stokes) of Glen St. Mary, FL: three daughters, Lynn Pifer (Mitch) of Glen St. Mary, FL, Diane (George) Helton of Gainesville, FL and Rena Pipkins and Macclenny, FL: four sisters, Shirley Moore of Jacksonville, FL, Joyce Faye Mattox of Macclenny, FL, Delores (Johnny) Clements of Zephyrhills, FL and Linda Burnsed of Sanderson, FL. Eleven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren also survive. A funeral service to honor the life of Ms. Smothers will be held at 11 A.M., Friday, November 15th in the Chapel of Guerry Forbes Funeral Home with Apostle Michael D. Walker officiating. Visitation and gathering with the family will be held from 10 to 11 A.M. (one hour prior to services). Interment will follow the funeral services in Manntown Cemetery, Glen St. Mary, FL.
