Doyle Wray Griffis, age 89 of Glen St. Mary went to be with the Lord Saturday, September 4, 2021 at his home with his loving son by his side. He was born on March 1, 1932 in Glen St. Mary to the late Willie and Ora (Register) Griffis. Doyle was a graduate of Macclenny High School and a two year letterman on the football team. He would proudly serve in the United States Navy on the USS Paricutin (AE-18) during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge, Doyle would return home and would dedicate over thirty years to the Florida Department of Transportation until his retirement. In his time away from work, Mr. Doyle loved everything about the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was always in the yard, tending to his garden and livestock.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Harold Griffis, Edith Coleman, Arlene Hendrickson, and Gracie Rhoden.
He leaves behind to cherish years of memories; his son: Mike (Tina) Griffis of Glen St. Mary; grandchildren: Jay (Danielle) Crews, Justin (Amber) Griffis, and Sara (Brandon) Little; great-grandchildren: Jagger, Brady, Cohen, Kellen, Bailey, Gentri, Jensen, and Harley; sister: Zelma Story of Tallahassee; step-children: Julie, Wanda, and Laura, as well as their families; and extended family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Macclenny with Doyle’s grandson, Rev. Justin Griffis officiating and Pastor Scott Ellison assisting. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Interment will follow at Manntown Cemetery with Rev. Albert Starling officiating the committal service.
A special thank you from the family to Mr. Doyle’s recent family of caregivers including Melissa, Summer, Makayla, Danielle, Chelzie, Tanna, and Amy, as well as Veteran Affairs, Haven Hospice, Baker County Council on Aging, and others that assisted in his care over the years.
